school and the world

I realize that I was going to offer my opinion on Chavez and the United States but I am not in the mood tonight. I would like to be serious for this posting. I am starting a new project with my International Relations class and my 9th grade advisory. We are learning about modern slavery. It is shocking and appalling to know that there are approx. 27 million people wordwide that our in slavery. Today, 27 million human are used as free labor, sex labor, indentured servants or paid at a level that leaves them indebted to the companies that they work. No country seems to be free of this situation. You hear about it on the news, women coming from China or other countries illegally. When they arrive in the States, they are told that if they want to stay or even live that they are required to become prostitutes until they pay off their debt. Undocumented workers that are subjected to unbelievable working conditions in meat packing plants in order to make a living. Families in Indonesia that sell their 10 year old child into prostitution so that they can have money to eat. Women, children and some men captured and sold into slavery in Darfur. Debt bondage which happens all the time worldwide. Please if you read this posting, tell a friend or family member. The more people who become aware of these issues in our global, ever shrinking world, the more we can do to stop them. Pay attention to the news, the media reports on these cases all the time, its just never the top story. They leave the top story for people like Anna Nicole Smith and the US governments ever failing Iraq policy. For the record, never supported that war, not for one day. Colin Powell never gave any convincing evidence to show that Iraq was ever a threat to the United States. Please check out the websites posted below:

It's amazing the things that Americans don't know. I'm sure that we are the most in-the-dark people on earth. The slave trade is alive and well, just like racism is in America. We just refuse to see it. By the way, Anna Nicole is still dead! Our politicians refuse to learn from thheir mistakes too. Can see beyond next week? The US started the whole Islamic insurgency in 1953 when Eisenhower ousted a democratically elected government from Iran and repalced it with the Shah. Who remembers THAT?? (Hint- it was for OIL)

Love Latin America. Jordan & I will be in Guatemala again in June.
